The Interview Process

We meet most of our summer associate candidates through the on-campus recruitment programs held at various law schools and other locations around the country.

Qualified candidates selected through our initial on-campus recruitment are invited to interview further by spending a full day at the Firm.   Expenses for this visit will be covered by FLH.

During this day-long interview, the candidate will meet with four to six partners for about a half-hour each.  The partners will represent different practice areas within the Firm.  The objective of these meetings is to help the candidate understand the history, current practice areas and prospective growth of the Firm.  In particular, these meetings will focus on the breadth of FLH’s practice and the integral role associates play in all aspects of our work.  The meetings also allow our partners to get to know and assess the candidate’s qualifications in an objective and fair manner.

The candidate also will attend an in-house round table lunch with three to five associates who have been practicing for one to five years as FLH attorneys, many of whom began as summer associates at the Firm.  The purpose of this lunch is multifold.  First, it gives the candidate the opportunity to ask questions and speak with the young associates in an open, engaging and informative setting.  Second, it allows the candidate to learn about the details of the summer associate program from attorneys who have experienced it first-hand, and who currently are acting as mentors to summer associates.

During this roundtable, candidates are given an in-depth picture of what it is like to be a new associate at FLH.  Discussions include the type of work the candidate will be expected to perform, the extent of the workload, the variety of personal responsibilities, the opportunities for training, and the kind of lifestyle an associate will encounter when joining FLH.

In meeting with more experienced associates, the candidate also will learn how attorneys develop and advance at the Firm.  A key part of our philosophy at FLH is to empower associates and give them major responsibilities at very early stages in their careers once they have demonstrated creativity, enthusiasm and high-quality work product.  The roundtable lunch will speak to this core value and situate it in the broader context of life and work as a summer associate and ongoing member of the FLH community.

We take pride in the structure and professionalism of our interview process and rely on it as a critical tool to ensuring that our candidates are the right match for our summer associate program – and the FLH community more broadly.  We look forward to seeing you on-campus to launch this exciting process.
